NewFilmmakers Salutes Radical Identity Adjustment

Tonight's Documentary Screening Seminar on Radical Identity Adjustment has been
organized by the International Film and Television Exchange in cooperation with
the Graduate Social Research Program, Hunter College and the Pace University
doctoral program in Psychology.

5:30PM THE GIFT, Documentary, Louise Hogarth, 60:00, 2003

Following the new phenomenon of deliberate HIV/AIDS infection among a small
group of gay men, Hogarth shows the post-80s AIDS panic return to a sex-driven
gay life style, with some intentionally chasing 'the bug' to receive the 'gift'
of HIV/AIDS.  The film takes an uncompromising view of the contradictory results
of safe sex campaigns and the implicit glamorization of AIDS by the
pharmaceutical industry--which promises a long and beautiful life with AIDS. THE
GIFT presents individuals for whom voluntary HIV infection is tantamount to
completing their gay identity.

6:30PM AMERICAN EUNUCHS - DESIGNED IDENTITIES, Franco Sacchi and Gian Claudio
Guiducci, Claus Mueller, Consulting Producer. 72:00, 2004

This documentary investigates the surreal and sometimes tragic underworld of
contemporary Eunuchs in the United States, where each year hundreds of men
voluntarily choose castration to adjust to or design a new identity. The film
provides portraits of three such individuals who have opted for castration along
with those who help them--'cutters' or self made surgeons who perform the
illegal procedure, including a preacher working out of seedy motel rooms and an
old medical doctor whose website offering the service drew thousands of hits.

8:00PM WHOLE, Melody Gilbert, 60:00, 2003

This film introduces us to the small, mostly male world of individuals who
believe that they will only have a whole identity if they succeed getting rid of
a limb, often the left leg. For these individuals, having two legs generates
distress and suffering, driving them to reach the goal of loosing a leg by any
means necessary, from self-inflicted amputation to surgery.

9:00PM - 10:00 PM PANEL

Herbert Krauss, Pace University, Psychology
Sandra Cohen, Psychoanalyst, Cornell University Medical School
Victoria Pitts, Queens College/CUNY, Sociology
Claus Mueller, Hunter College, Moderator

Learning from Bob and Denise is an upcoming feature-length documentary exploring the complex and contradictory world of the architects, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. Husband and wife partners, Venturi and Scott Brown are widely considered among the most influential designers of the 20th century. Alternately vilified and idolized many times over in the course of their careers, theirs is a story that is part biography, part art history and part sociological survey of the past half century.

Following the screening we will have a discussion with the producer, their son James Venturi and Nathaniel Kahn, the director of MY ARCHITECT.

7:00 NEWFILMMAKERS SPECIAL PROGRAM

The Youth Channel is a division of Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) targeting youth under 25. It is an alternative to mass media-providing equal access to all young people, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation or social status. Manhattan Neighborhood Network's Youth Channel was established in March 2000 with the mission of providing disadvantaged, low-income and minority youth with access to a quality media forum through which to express creativity, foster dialogue, and encourage social and political participation. We provide trainings and hands on experience in all aspects of public access television and video production. With a strong emphasis on media education, media production and youth media distribution we empower young people to see themselves as participants of media and not just consumers. While working directly with youth from NYC, we also provide an outlet for youth media nationwide and globally. The Youth Channel strives to build confidence, establish role models, inform, educate, and entertain. It empowers youth to create change within their communities and the world.

Our in-house production Beyond the Hijab: Struggling against Stereotypes will be the main feature. It is approx. 20 minutes long. Beyond the Hijab: Struggling Against Stereotypes, a documentary made by and about 18 year-old Habibah Ahmad, a young Afro-American Muslim woman, and her daily struggle against discriminatory labels. The video is a vivid exploration of race, identity and religious intolerance in post 9/11 America.  Habibah narrates the film, as she talks about Islam, choice and her life. The camera follows her as she interacts with her peers and family members and asks questions about religious freedom, discrimination and the future.  Beyond the Hijab: Struggling Against Stereotypes provides a rich and challenging look inside the life of a young person torn between many alliances and facing intolerance as she tries to find her way.

In the wake of a sudden loss, Eddy (Ryan Donowho) unexpectedly skips town, leaving his friends to mourn for him. A vagabond musician, Eddy runs until there is was nowhere left to run to but home. The Pacific and Eddy captures the uncertainty of a time when indenties begin to reveal themselves. Finding refuge in the swells of the Pacific, Eddy must look inward to deal with the loss he truly never mourned. Following in the tradition Blow Up and Code Unknown where story information is oblique and often challenging, The Pacific and Eddy keeps the audience enchanted by it's subtle mystique and visual beauty. In addition to these core elements, music is monumental in the film's effectiveness and emotional resonance.
