We follow Doyle over his college years as he begins to build relationships with several colorful characters such as Saul, a homeless book dealer who shows him the ropes and his own brand of street philosophy, and Allyson, a beautiful, struggling actress he carefully begins to pursue and fall for. Adrian Belic* BEYOND THE CALL (2006, 82 Minutes, Video)

Ed, Jim and Walt are not your average weekend warriors. Ordinary, inconspicuous Americans with wives, careers and hobbies, these three friends realize their deepest passion in life through self-financed humanitarian missions to war zones around the globe. In Beyond the Call, documentary filmmaker Adrian Belic (Academy Award nominated Genghis Blues, 1999) tracks these self-styled knights in shining armor—the trio met as members of the self-styled service organization Knights of Malta—from Afghanistan and Tajikistan to Burma and the Philippines as they risk life and death to hand over cash, food, clothing and medical supplies to desperate refugees. Indifferent to politics or religion and frustrated with bureaucracies that more often than not obstruct the flow of international aid, these intrepid do-gooders embark on their privately funded missions simply because they can.

On the home front, the organization of three known as Knightsbridge International  receives up to 500 emails a day requesting help. Ed, a former mortgage banker, Walt, a rural electrical contractor, and Jim, a cardiologist, each brings his own area of expertise to the group, pooling its resources to collect donated goods and hand-deliver them overseas. Whether installing a solar-powered oven at a girls' school in Afghanistan or delivering a million dollars worth of medicine to a refugee camp in Manila the far southern Philippines, the winsome subjects of Beyond the Call demonstrate time and again how altruism makes the world go round. Screened at over 100 film festivals on five continents, Winner of 38 Awards including Grand Jury Prizes and Audience Awards.

It was home to a myriad of characters from players in the media to hipsters, gangsters, and society darlings. The documentary follows Siberia from its start, originating in a subway station on Fiftieth Street. It supports the innovative work of diverse forms and genres made by artists who are intimately connected to their subjects through common bonds of ethnic/cultural heritage, class position, gender, sexual orientation and political identification. TWN promotes the self-representation of traditionally marginalized groups as well as the negotiated representation of those groups by artists who work in solidarity with them. For more information, please visit www.twn.org.

DocuClub and Third World Newsreel (TWN) are pleased to present three work-in-progress documentaries directed by the 2008 class of TWN's Film and Video Production Workshop. Please join us on Tuesday, December 16, 6PM at Anthology Film Archives for a screening of:

Lottie Porch and Vanara Taing BEYOND THE MUSIC (8 min)
Explores the joy and sense of community within the Inspirational Choir at Riverside Church in New York City. Rather than concentrating on the choir's repertoire of contemporary gospel, traditional spirituals and African folk music, the film explores the philosophy of sharing and the pure fun that its director, Nedra Olds-Neal has shared with her choir members for the past 20 years. An uplifting look at people who love to sing and  care deeply about each other.

Jennifer Fasulo and Manauvaskar Kublall PRIMETIME: Fighting Back Against Foreclosure (22 min)
This timely film takes the viewer behind the foreclosure statistics and into the homes and hearts of two NYC women who have been pummeled by the foreclosure tsunami.  It breaks down the complex issues of the sub-prime mortgage industry into easy to understand language and reveals the systematic culpability of the financial institutions. As the US government continues to bail out the financial industry, PRIMETIME is an urgent reminder of the on-the-ground struggles of people fighting to keep their homes.

Nuala Cabral, Jasial Noor and Thanushka Yakupitiyage Glitter in the Hood: Gentrification in Brooklyn (12 min)
Brooklyn residents, business owners and activists share diverse perspectives and common fears about community development.
