NewFilmmakers Celebrates Dance

6:00 NEWFILMMAKERS DOCS, MOCKS & MORE

VENEZUELA RISING
Directed by Jennifer Wager.

As seen through the eyes of grandmother and community organizer Gladys Bolivar, the documentary follows her and her compatriots five days before it is to be decided by popular referendum whether Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will continue in office or step down. The entire nation has been mobilized will it be SI  yes he will be recalled, or NO he will remain in office. Most in Venezuela feel that no less than the en tire future of their country is at stake.

Issues of democracy and politics are addressed -- what constitutes a free and fair election -- and is that enough to ensure citizen participation? How are elections the ultimate measure of a thriving democracy? Venezuela Rising gets behind the headlines and into the neighborhoods of Caracas to find out how participatory democracy works on the ground.

7:00 NEWFILMMAKERS SHORT FILM PROGRAM

Jen Senko ROAD MAP WARRIOR WOMEN (2000, 27 minutes, Video)

Road Map Warrior Women is an on-the-road documentary short about women in the contemporary Wes; tough, independent souls who have broken the molds and escaped stereotypes.

During several road trips in the 1990s, ranging from Montana down to New Mexico, New York-based filmmaker Jen Senko met and interviewed a remarkable variety of women; urban refugees, artists, ex-wives, owners of small businesses and horse wranglers.  They are smart, humorous and surprisingly frank about their lives.  Whether exploring a dream, a refuge, a hunch, each of these people has learned not only to survive but to endure.

In the course of her travels, Senko learns about the true nature of women and something about herself as well.

Carol Jackson CENSORIOUS (2005. 34 minutes, Video)
