The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) is a national
membership organization that addresses the professional needs of Latino/Latina
independent producers. NALIP is the first such effort aimed at Latino production
in thirty years, and it is the first to last more than one year and to provide
ongoing support for the Latino independent film and video makers. In five years,
we have emerged as the premiere Latino media organization, addressing the most
underrepresented and the largest ethnic minority in the country. For more
information, please visit www.nalip.org.
9:00 NEWFILMMAKERS FEATURE PRESENTATION
Stephen Padilla THE LITTLE THINGS
(2006, 90 Minutes, Mini DV)
"The Little Things" is
a verite-style, character-rich portrait of life and love among late
twentysomethings living and working in New York City. The film chronicles the
lives of four "kidults," people without the experience of intimacy
that would otherwise allow them to take on adult life fully.
Miranda is a teacher whose
life with her boyfriend, Jace, is comfortable, if
unsatisfying, until she meets Michael. Michael opens Miranda up to his world
of intimacy, intensity and vulnerability, the likes of which she's never
before experienced, but always secretly desired. The only problem is that
Michael is otherwise entangled in a relationship of his own with his girlfriend,
Katie. As Michael and Miranda begin to negotiate the complexities of their
budding relationship, they are forced to deal with the realities of their
individual circumstances.
"The Little Things" is
Padilla's first narrative feature-length film. Having had a number of scripts
optioned, but never produced, Padilla took it upon himself to make a film on his
own. Two years ago, he sat down to write something that he could direct and
produce using the limited resources available to him. The result is a film that
captures a generation trapped between adolescence and adulthood.
"For years, I had been
fascinated with the dissatisfaction of people of my generation with their
lives," Padilla says. "For the most part, they were in long-term,
committed relationships that they had chosen just a few years before and many of
them were in the midst of rather successful careers for which they had educated
themselves. And yet they seemed utterly dissatisfied with their lives. And I
wanted to know why. So I set out to make a film about these people and what I
found was an entire generation who possess none of the resources necessary to
manage happiness."
Completed with support from the
IFP, "The Little Things" won the Audience Award at the 2006 Red Bank
International Film Festival. More information on the film can be found at
