FIGHTING IRISH
(2003, 104 minutes, video)
What do you get when you mix a tough Irish kid with a topless bar, a biker
gang, a beautiful stripper girlfriend, an alcoholic mother, an abusive
father, bats, knives, axe handles, guns, the police, the FBI, extreme
violence, sleep deprivation and an inordinate amount of pride? The answer is
Fighting Irish. Based on a true story Fighting Irish, is an action/drama
about a man and his personal three-year war with an entire biker gang. In
the 90''s The Warlords Motorcycle gang were a fixture in the New York
nightlife scene, extorting money from bar owners and basically terrorizing
the entire industry with their brand of violence. This all changed in 1995
when a down on his luck young man named Sean McCarthy took the Warlords
actions personal. Stars Ray Daly, Kara Hamilton, Mary Beth Pape, Fred
Russell, John Whitaker, Scott Klavan.

WELCOME TO PURGATORY
2003, 112 minutes, video
Ever wonder what it would be like to be an actor in New York? Thomas Mundis
wondered that--and now he's sorry he did. See, nobody told him about the
acting teacher who would prey on his every weakness. Or the agents who won't
return his phone calls. Or how coffee in New York costs $6 a cup.
Add to Thomas' problems the fact that each of his friends at the UNY acting
program are undergoing problems of their own. And Thomas meets Dolly, a
beautiful and talented former acting student herself--and possibly the only
person that's more depressed than he is. Part biting satire, part valentine
to the starving artist in all of us, Welcome to Purgatory is a hilarious
comedy that shines the spotlight on some of the acting has-beens and
never-weres--and shows that just maybe, with time, patience, and a little
bit of luck, we'll all still get our chance...

will,"
showed over 150 films in two days! The Picture Show is also known for
it's celebrity-filled, mayhem-fueled Monday Night awards ceremony --
The Groceries -- which doles mounted cans or pigeon peas and other
special awards. This year's celebrities included Abel Ferrara, Soupy
Sales, Melissa auf der Maur, Michael Musto and more! See a collection of

ANATHEMA
2003, 99 minutes, 16mm)
ANATHEMA is an existential psychosexual road movie.
Niel is a taciturn, disfranchised kid from suburbia given to waking
fantasies and bouts of mild narcolepsy. He has gravitated to the city
where
he drifts aimlessly - until his serendipitous encounter with a young
prostitute named Lily. The strange chemistry between the them sparks a
mutual exploration of their dark and dangerous repressions.
Spontaneously, the two decide to take a road trip. When Niel's car breaks
down, they meet a hitchhiker named Mahan. The three decide to share a
motel
room for the night. A surreal encounter with a bizarre theater
troupe
leads them into a three-way sexual foray that has some unanticipated
consequences.
The next morning is dicey, but Niel and Lily manage to get back on the road.
Inevitably, Niel's car begins to fail again. He and Lily are forced to
seek
refuge in a house that belongs to an elderly, infirm woman named Elsa.
Over
the course of the night, Lily develops a tacit bond with Elsa - a mother she
never had.
After this experience, Lily knows what she must do. She must pay a
visit
to her estranged father, a wealthy dilettante whose wife, Lily's mother,
died when Lily was young. This last stop has Lily coming to full terms
with
her profoundly broken childhood. Niel, through his empathetic connection
with Lily, finds himself reliving her most traumatic childhood experiences.
He becomes the unwitting agent of both her father's bloody redemption and
the ultimate reconciliation between Lily and her father.

SOUL OF AN EMPIRE
(2003, 57 minutes, 35mm)
Narrated by Robert Guillaume, Soul of an Empire, Documentary
traces the re-development of 42nd Street and focuses on the startling
transformation of the AMC Empire Theater from a burlesque house to an
enormous 25 screen mulitplex cinema.
In the very heart of Times Square, an extraordinary building makes a
miraculous journey 168 feet west to a position of prominence on the new 42nd
Street. Built in 1912, the 7 million pound burlesque house was moved
hydraulically to become the foyer for an enormous 25-screen multiplex
cinema. This exquisitely photographed film follows this $200 million
construction project from beginning to bittersweet conclusion. The Empire
Theatre is both a proud symbol of the past and a fragile beacon for the
future.

Alexis J. Estevez
ANIMUS
(2003, 90 minutes, video)
Alexis J. Estevez makes a splash in the independent film world with his debut
feature, an inventive
low-budget romance with a strong-willed heroine. Janice Chung (Connie Teng)
can't commit to a man
"unless he's the one." She begins dating Joaquin (Carlos Valencia), a
struggling artist who's
old-fashioned romantic views clash with hers. Within this loose story line
Estevez launches into a
character study of Janice and her family to offer a slice of Korean-American
urban life rarely seen on the
screen. According to Estevez's production diary, he interviewed dozens of women
and gathered feedback on a screenplay from female friends, and his efforts show.
Janice is an unapologetic, sexually independent character who resists the
efforts of the men in her life to change who she is to please them--the
wonderful concluding twist thumbs its nose at romantic conventions and gives
Janice her due. Estevez combines direct address and documentary techniques with
a simple, often elegant narrative style to create a multilayered portrait of
Janice and her men and question perceptions and conventions of sex,
sexuality, and relationships in the modern world. Though somewhat primitive
compared with big-budget works, this first feature introduces Estevez as a fresh
voice and a creative force to be reckoned with."

GET RID OF YOURSELF
2003, 64 minutes, video
Based on experience at the G8 counter summit in Genoa two years, GET RID OF
YOURSELF results from the unlikely encounter between the New York City based
artist collaborative Bernadette Corporation and members of the anarchist
Black Bloc. The Film revisits the post nouvelle vague cinetract genre while
questioning representational politics and documentary film making.
